Spain: Russia launches investigation into ‘serious violations of international humanitarian law’ in Ukraine

Spanish justice has announced that it is launching an investigation into “serious violations of international humanitarian law” stemming from Russia’s “unwarranted military action” in Ukraine, the prosecutor’s office said.

The announcement comes hours after an investigation was launched by the German Attorney General’s Office into possible war crimes committed by Russian forces in Ukraine.

The Spanish justice investigation “aims to determine the criminal nature of the events and to carry out as many investigations as necessary”, the prosecutor clarifies.

“The attack on Ukraine’s sovereign nation is an unwarranted act of warfare that is not covered by any international law, and which” results in other serious violations of international humanitarian law, “the prosecutor’s office said.

“The actions of the Russian Federation and its leaders did not take place in the context of any legitimate cause or circumstance,” the prosecutor added, adding that the Spanish judiciary, under the principle of jurisdiction, has jurisdiction to investigate the facts. outside the national territory which [και] can be classified (criminally) in accordance with Spanish law “.

German Justice Minister Marco Bushmann told the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper that European justice ministers had agreed on procedures for documenting possible war crimes committed in Ukraine.

The International Criminal Court in The Hague is also examining similar allegations and has been investigating allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity since last week.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 and is waging war across the country by bombing major cities. At least two million people have already fled the country, according to the UN.

Many civilians were killed and testimonies speak of the use of cluster munitions and attacks on residential areas and political infrastructure.
