Spain sent back to Morocco 6,500 migrants from Ceuta

Back to Morocco At least 6,500 migrants were sent out of the approximately 8,000 who had entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa earlier this week, Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said today.

Marlaska told Radio COPE that the situation is now normal compared to the previous days, and expressed the hope that the recent diplomatic confrontation with Morocco “will be as short as possible”.

According to AMPE, Morocco seemed to loosen border controls with Ceuta on Monday, May 17 as thousands of migrants flocked to the enclave, a move widely interpreted as retaliation for the hosting by Spain of Western Saharan separatist leader Brahim Gali. Gali has been hospitalized in Spain since last month.

“It is inconceivable that a humanitarian move is causing a situation like the crisis in Ceuta,” he said.
