Spain: Supermarkets restrict sunflower oil market amid fears of shortages over Ukraine

Many Spanish supermarkets have started selling sunflower oil with the coupon, so that consumers can not stock up because they are afraid of shortages due to the war in Ukraine.

“Due to the situation in Ukraine we have problems with the supply of sunflower oil. For this reason it is allowed to buy only three one-liter bottles or a package of five liters per customer per day,” reads in small letters on the shelves of many supermarkets in the Corte chain. Inglés in Madrid.

The restrictions became necessary because consumers “turned to sunflower oil” causing an “abnormal demand” for the product, according to Asedas, the Spanish Supermarket Association. Some consumers fear shortages because Ukraine decided on Sunday, in the midst of the war, that exports of certain agricultural products, including sunflower oil, would henceforth be allowed with special permission from the authorities.

Primitivo Fernandez, director of the National Association of Edible Oil Industries (Anierac), assured that “at the moment there is no risk of shortage”.

Ukraine ranks first in the world in terms of production and export of sunflower oil.
