Spain: The battle of the… tomato – Impressive photos from the Tomatina festival

After two years of absence, due to the pandemic, the Tomatina festival in Spain is back, with revelers throwing 130 ripe tomatoes at each other in the eastern Spanish town of Buñol.

Six trucks with overripe tomatoes drove through the narrow streets of Buñol and distributed the fruits and vegetables to the attendees, who filled the streets and themselves with the red pulp.

The tomato fight has been a Spanish custom since 1945 and seems to have originated from a fight between two villagers. It was banned for a time during the 1950s at the height of General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship, but became popular again in the 1980s and today attracts large crowds of locals and tourists.

Almost a decade ago the organizers started selling tickets, as the festival with the tomatoes there was a lot of people.
