The Spanish government announced today that it will gradually expand access to a third booster dose of Covid-19 vaccine for those over 40, in order to increase their protection against the outbreak of the epidemic.
The Public Health Committee “approved the issuance of a commemorative dose” for these people, the Ministry of Health said in a statement, without specifying when the platform for closing the appointments will open.
“This will be done gradually,” the ministry explains, targeting those over the age of 50, and only those who received the second dose more than six months ago will be able to take the booster dose.
Until now, Spain has given a third dose to people over the age of 60 as well as to health professionals or immunocompromised people, regardless of their age.
The third dose has been accelerated in recent days in all European countries facing a strong re-emergence of COVID-19 infections, which is mainly associated with an increase in the Omicron variant.
However, the rules for administering the booster dose vary from country to country. In France, for example, the booster dose is available to the entire adult population five months after the last dose.
