Spain: Tourist arrivals increased eightfold in March

Spain welcomed 4 million tourists in March, more than eight times more than in the same period last year, after most of the pandemic-related restrictions were lifted, the country’s statistics office (INE) said today.

Foreign tourists spent 5.07 billion euros while vacationing in the country in March, compared to just 544m euros a year earlier, according to the figures.

“Spain is closing this first quarter with good data on arrivals and tourist arrivals, a trend that we hope will intensify during the summer,” Tourism Minister Regas Maroto said in a Twitter post. “The excellent data on employment along with the recovery of capacity in aviation make us optimistic,” she added.

The number of tourists visiting Spain in March was 1.6 million less than the number of visitors in March 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic. The amount spent then was 6.03 billion euros.

The international travel restrictions related to COVID-19 brought the Spanish tourism industry to its knees in 2020, which is of particular importance to the economy. Tourism accounted for 12% of the Spanish economy before the pandemic.

The tourism industry began to recover gradually in 2021, marking a slight pause when the rapid spread of the Omicron variant led to a temporary new round of travel restrictions.
