Spain’s trade deficit quadrupled in the first four months of the year mainly due to the significant rise in oil and gas prices following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the industry ministry said.
The figures stood at 21.81 billion euros, up from 4.56 billion euros a year ago.
Excluding energy imports and exports, the trade deficit during the period stood at just 5.66 billion euros.
Imports increased by 39% from the corresponding period of the previous year to 142.74 billion euros, while exports increased by 23.2% to 120.92 billion euros.
The value of energy imports in April rose 179% year-on-year, while gas imports increased fivefold to 2.73 billion euros, with oil imports doubling to 5.15 billion euros.
