Her police Spain announced today the arrest of three suspects as part of the investigation into the attempted murder of Alejo Vidal-Cuadras, former head of the People’s Party (PP) in Catalonia. One of the suspects was arrested in Málaga and the other two in Granada, a police source said, confirming initial reports reported by news website El Confidencial and radio station Cadena SER.
Two of those arrested are Spanish, while the nationality of the third has not yet been confirmed, the same source added. The police are investigating whether they have connections with foreign countries.
Vidal-Cuadras was shot in the face while walking in the wealthy district of Salamanca in central Madrid shortly after noon on November 9 by a gunman who wore a helmet and fled on a motorcycle. The 78-year-old politician survived, as the bullet went through his jaw, but is still hospitalized. A court responsible for counter-terrorism has taken over the case.
Vidal-Cuadras was the head of the center-right PP in Catalonia, one of the founders of the Spanish far-right party Vox, while he was an MEP (1999-2014) and vice-president of the European Parliament from 2009 to 2014.
He is also a staunch supporter of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (CNRI), an exiled Iranian dissident group that has blamed Tehran for the attack.
