Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this Wednesday (24) that he will suspend his public agenda until next week to decide whether he wants to continue leading the government, after a court launched an investigation against the prime minister's wife.
“I need to pause and think. I urgently need an answer to the question of whether it is worth it (…) whether I should continue to lead the government or renounce this honor”, Sanchez wrote in a letter shared on X.
He stated that he will announce his decision to the press on Monday (29).
The surprising announcement came after a Spanish court said on Wednesday it was opening a preliminary investigation into whether Sanchez's wife, Begona Gomez, committed the crime of influence peddling and business corruption in their private dealings.
Sanchez pointed out that the seriousness of the attacks he and his wife are receiving deserved a considered response.
The court investigating Gomez did not provide further details, as the case is secret and preliminary, only highlighting that it follows a complaint filed by the anti-corruption campaign group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), whose leader has links to the extreme right.
The group alleged that Gomez used her influence as the prime minister's wife to allegedly secure sponsors for a university master's course she ran.
