Spanish woman who survived three wars and two pandemics is the oldest person in the world, according to Guinness

María Branyas Morera is 115 years and 328 days old and is now confirmed as the oldest living person in the world, according to a Guinness World Records press release released on Thursday (26).

The title was granted after the death of 118-year-old French nun Lucile Randon, who died on January 17.

“I’m old, very old, but I’m not an idiot,” says María Branyas Morera’s biography on Twitter.

In a series of tweets in Catalan on Saturday (21), María Branyas Morera said she was “surprised and grateful” by the interest generated in becoming the oldest living person in the world, but that the last few days had been “stressful” and that she did not I would do more interviews.

“I need peace and quiet. (…) I’ve lived at Residência Tura for 22 years and I don’t want the day-to-day life of residents or the staff who serve us to change,” he tweeted.

According to Guinness World Records, María Branyas Morera was born in San Francisco, California on March 4, 1907, a year after her parents immigrated to the country. Eight years later they decided to return to Spain, where they settled in Catalonia.

Maria has called the region home ever since. He has lived in the same nursing home – the Residencia Santa María del Tura – for 22 years.

“She is in good health and remains amazed and grateful for the attention this birthday has generated,” the house said in a statement on Thursday.

María survived the World Wars, the Spanish Civil War, the Spanish flu pandemic and Covid-19.

Guinness World Records says she contracted the virus a few weeks after celebrating her 113th birthday, but fully recovered within days.

Maria has three children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
