Special counsel Jack Smith, who oversaw the federal criminal investigations into Donald Trump on charges of trying to sway the 2020 election and withholding classified documents, has resigned, Politico reported today. Smith resigned from the Justice Department as the president-elect prepares to return to the White House in less than ten days. Smith’s resignation came after Justice Department officials filed a request with U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon on Saturday afternoon, urging her not to extend an injunction she issued last week temporarily blocking the release of Smith’s final report on the Trump case.
