«Spencer»: here’s Kristen Stewart in the role of Lady Diana

The black hat, the veil over the eyes, the red jacket and the head slightly tilted to one side, a distinctive feature of all the official shots and photos in which she was immortalized. This is how Kristen Stewart presents herself as Princess Diana in Spencer, the new film directed by Chilean director Pablo Larraín and one of the most anticipated titles in next year’s cinema. Written by the creator of Peaky Blinders Steven Knight, the biopic will focus on the Christmas weekend that Lady D spends at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, crucial days during which she decides to divorce Charles and give up the title of princess.

Shooting, which will split between Germany and the UK, is expected to finish in the autumn to allow the film to be released in 2022, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Diana’s death.

Produced by Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Films, Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski for Komplizen Film and Paul Webster for Shoebox Films, Spencer comes at a time when attention to the princess and her past is more alive than ever, about the fourth season of The Crown distributed by Netflix last November and the extraordinary interpretation of the actress Emma Corrin, who warns Stewart about studying a very difficult character not only to play, but also to live on her own skin. “Spencer it is a dive into the emotional imagination linked to who Diana was at a fundamental turning point in her life. It’s a heartbreaking effort for her to go back, not least because she’s trying to keep what the name Spencer means to her, ”Stewart said.

“It’s an independently produced film for the big screen about an iconic woman’s declaration of independence. We couldn’t be more enthusiastic “explained the producers and Larraín himself who, in addition to counting on the screenplay written by Knight – who said he didn’t see The Crown not to be influenced in the writing of the script – will count on a particularly rich cast that sees, among others, BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner), la candidata all’Oscar Sally Hawkins (The shape of water) e Sean Harris (Mission: Impossible). On trust, some think that this for Kristen Stewart, now very launched in arthouse films, is the right time for a Golden Globe and Oscar nomination although, for the moment, the actress seems very focused on returning a princess as more multifaceted and close to reality as possible.
