“Spider-Man” maintains box office dominance and surpasses US$600 million in the US

Another weekend, another victory for “Spider-Man: No Return Home” at the box office.

The sequel to the comic-book-based film, starring Tom Holland as the neighborhood-friendly web launcher, took #1 at the US box office for the third weekend in a row.

“Sem Volta Para Casa” raised 52.7 million during New Year’s week in the United States, bringing the collection in the country to $609 million.

No other blockbuster has come close to the same magnitude at the box office, at least in the US and Canada.

After “Spider-Man: No Back Home,” the second-highest gross in Covid-19 times is Disney and Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which grossed $224 million on the same market.

Without any competition until the release of “Scream 5,” the fifth episode of Paramount’s horror sequel, on Jan. 14, Holland’s teenage hero will continue to raise money.

For those who aren’t superhero fans or who’ve seen Spider-Man in theaters more than once, Universal and Illumination’s musical animation “Sing 2” had another relatively strong weekend.

The film, which features voices from stars like Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and more, grossed $19.6 million between Friday and Sunday, just 12 percent below its premiere.

Since it debuted before Christmas, the highly rated “Sing 2” has grossed $89.6 million, an impressive figure for pandemic times.

To illustrate how non-superhero movies are still struggling, the first “Sing” of 2016 sold many more tickets, topping 270 million US dollars and 634 million internationally.

Disney and 20th Century’s “King’s Man: Inception,” part of the cinematic universe of “Kingsmen,” took third place over the weekend with $4.5 million. The figure is only 24% lower than the opening weekend, but sales haven’t gone so well from the start.

So far, the spy comedy has earned $19.5 million at the US box office. Internationally, “King’s Man: The Origin” raised $14.1 million in 22 markets, boosting global revenue to $47.8 million.
