“Spider-Man” (2002)
The first production of the sequence tells the story in which Peter Parker gains superpowers after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. In the cast, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst play the main couple, Spider-Man and Mary Jane, immortalizing the kiss scene upside down.
In addition to them, Willem Dafoe plays the villain Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, James Franco plays Harry Osborn and JK Simmons plays J. Jonah Jameson. The director, Sam Raimi, also took on the two sequel films.
The film was nominated for two Oscars: for “Best Visual Effects” and “Best Sound”; but lost to “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” and “Chicago”, respectively.
“Spider-Man 2” (2004)
In the plot of the second film, Dr. Otto Octavius is transformed into Dr. Octopus when a nuclear fusion experiment results in an explosion that kills his wife. Meanwhile, Peter Parker's powers are hampered by his dual identity crisis.
Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe and James Franco renewed the cast of the film, alongside Alfred Molina, who plays the villain. “Spider-Man 2” grossed more than $788 million worldwide and won the Oscar for “Best Visual Effects.”
“Spider-Man 3” (2007)
In the last feature film directed by Sam Raimi, Spider-Man's costume turns black and ends up controlling Peter, revealing the dark side of his personality. While this is happening, the villains Venom and Sandman try to destroy the superhero.
Joining the original cast are Thomas Haden Churc, as Sandman, and Bryce Dallas Howard, playing Gwen Stacy.
In 2007, “Spider-Man 4” entered development, with Raimi directing and the actors renewed in their roles. However, in January 2010 it was announced by Sony Pictures that the plans had been canceled and that the studio would focus on a new story to restart the series.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” (2012)
Starring Andrew Garfield in the lead role and Emma Stone as his romantic partner, the film tells the story of when the superhero finds a briefcase that belonged to his father, leading Peter Park to try to find out why his parents disappeared.
As he begins a story with his first love, he arrives at Oscorp and Dr. Curt Connors, the villain Lizard, his father's former partner.
“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014)
In this film, the superhero has to deal with the arrival of a strong and powerful villain, Electro, while continuing to investigate the death of his parents and protect Gwen Stacy. Still, he has to deal with the return of his childhood friend, Harry Osborn, who is dying from a deadly genetic disease.
For the sequel, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones and Chris Cooper were cast, in addition to the actors from the previous film.
“The Amazing Spider-Man” series was planned to continue with two films and some spin-offs. However, due to conflicts between the studio, Andrew Garfield and Sony Pictures, they were all cancelled. The parallel productions that followed, such as “Venon”, released in 2018, were set in a separate timeline.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017)
The film takes place after the events of the Civil War, in which the hero tries out for a spot on the Avengers team — hence, “homecoming”. After fighting alongside the other superheroes, Peter Parker returns home to New York alongside his Aunt May and begins to assume his new identity as Spider-Man.
In the film's cast, Peter Parker is played by Tom Holland, Michelle Jones by Zendaya, Adrian Torres by Michael Keaton and features appearances by Iron Man, by Robert Downey Jr.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018)
The first animated feature film in the franchise has Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man, after Peter Parker passed away. The protagonist teams up with spiders from parallel universes to save his own from the Kingpin.
The dubbing cast includes: Mahershala Ali, Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney and Kimiko Glenn. The film won the Oscar and Golden Globe for “Best Animated Feature”.
“Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019)
Tom Holland and Zendaya return to the film as Spider-Man is recruited by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) to face threats from another dimension while he is on a school trip to Europe.
The production grossed more than US$1.1 billion worldwide, becoming the fourth highest-grossing film of 2019. In September of the same year, Marvel and Sony announced that they would produce a third film, even after an impasse between the two companies during the negotiations.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021)
Peter Parker has problems separating his normal life from that of being a superhero and his reputation is ruined because they think he was the one who killed Mysterio in the story of the previous film.
With that, the protagonist asks Dr. Strange to do a spell that makes everyone forget their true identity, but the magic doesn't go as planned and the villains from other universes end up going to his world.
“Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse” (2023)
Miles Morales is transported to the multiverse and joins Gwen Stacy, Spider-Woman, and a team of Spider-People from different dimensions. However, everything changes when the heroes conflict over how to deal with a new threat and must face a very powerful villain.
This was the longest animation produced by an American studio until its release. The third and final film in the trilogy, titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, was scheduled for release in 2024, however, it has been postponed indefinitely.
