Spielberg, Nolan and other filmmakers buy historic cinema in Los Angeles

In an effort to keep the movie industry alive, as well as create many of the films we know and love, some of Hollywood's most celebrated filmmakers are the proud new owners of a historic movie theater in Los Angeles.

Led by “Juno” and “Ghostbusters” director Jason Reitman, a coalition of 35 filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Bradley Cooper, Chloé Zhao and Christopher Nolan, has acquired the Village Theater, a 93-year-old landmark located in the neighborhood. of Westwood, Los Angeles.

The coalition's mission, according to a statement sent to CNN on Wednesday (21), is to “preserve the architectural gem and create a cultural landmark dedicated to the beloved moviegoing experience.”

Spielberg said in a statement Wednesday that he has vivid memories of seeing movies at the Village Theatre.

“I’m excited to be part of this group that aims to restore Westwood to its glory years as a cinematic cultural institution,” he added.

Judd Apatow, Damien Chazelle, Ryan Coogler, Alfonso Cuarón, Todd Phillips, Emma Thomas, Denis Villeneuve, Guillermo del Toro, James Gunn and Alexander Payne, among others, are also part of Reitman's coalition of theatrical investors.

Reitman has a personal connection with the Village Theatre, noting in a statement that he was inspired to take advantage of this opportunity having held a series of premieres of his films at the theater, including “Juno,” “Stop Love” and the recent “Ghostbusters: life after death.”

When the Village Theater came up for sale, Reitman said, “I immediately made an offer and hoped that my fellow directors would join me in this adventure. We take this administration very seriously and hope to provide a true community for those who love movies.”

Under its new ownership, Village Theater will present new and previously released classics that will be shown on the theater's standard and large-scale screens. Inside, the filmmakers will also display props, wardrobes and film prints from their personal collections.

The Village Theater has been a Los Angeles landmark since the 1930s and continues to host some of Hollywood's hottest film premieres.
