Something is really changing with regards toattention to sustainability and respect for the environment and they also try it the 59 Green Ears of 2021: the awards just awarded by Fee, Foundation for Environmental Education, to rural municipalities that in Italy that stand out for the way in which they protect and enhance their environmental resources. Well 18 new features compared to 2020, which you can see in the gallery above together with the list – divided by region – of the municipalities that have earned the Spiga Verde in the past editions and have maintained it over time.
They are the rural equivalent of the “Blue Flags” assigned to seaside resorts: not only because the Green Spikes are always assigned by Fee but because, just like the banner that identifies the Italian places with the cleanest and most beautiful sea, they have become a mark of quality. They are a guarantee for a countryside holiday made of nature, good food, authentic and slow welcome and therefore also a driving force for economic development and employment.
They certify the commitment of the municipalities to direct territorial management policies towards sustainability based on a long list of indicators that are evaluated by the Fee with a working group which includes the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies, the Ministry for Tourism, ISPRA (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research ) and Confagricoltura. In all they take into account 67 indicators for 16 macro-areas ranging fromeducation to respect for the environment promoted by municipalities, to protect biodiversity, and then protection of the soil, air quality but also water, the presence of typical products, accessibility for all without limitations and in general the proposed tourist accommodation. I’m constantly updated criteria, according to which each rural municipality that is a candidate to obtain the Spiga Verde is guided towards improvement, then evaluated, and also re-evaluated year by year, to verify that it still deserves to be included in the list left the list).
«We record this year an important increase in the Spighe Verdi localities – said Claudio Mazza president of FEE Italy – not only for the rural municipalities that today obtain the certification, but also for all the territories that have asked to start the path. From North to Center and South, a sign that the attention and commitment to sustainable development of the territory, the choice of management policies that respect the environment, the necessary synergy between local administrations and farmers is growing, as well as awareness is growing that this is the only viable path for our future “. Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Confagricoltura, he continued: “The pandemic has accentuated this belief and provided further elements to stimulate public administrations to invest in this direction. Our sector plays a role of primary importance, alongside the Municipalities, not only in the protection and enhancement of the territories, but increasingly in ecological transition which also involves rural cities, with their businesses and communities ».
In this sense, the most virtuous region for 2021 is Piedmont, with 10 Green Ears. The Marche follows, with 9 awarded locations, then Tuscany with 7, Puglia and Calabria with 6. Lazio has 5 locations, Campania 4, 3 in Umbria and Abruzzo, 2 in Veneto, 1 in Emilia Romagna, Liguria , Lombardy and Sicily.
