Sputnik V less effective against the South African mutation

Russian Sputnik V vaccine is less effective against its South African variant strain COVID-19, but it still does better than other vaccines, said today the head of scientists behind the vaccine.

“As far as South African variant strain“The effectiveness of the antibodies produced by Sputnik V, like all other vaccines against it, is declining,” Alexander Ginsburg told Interfax news agency.

He said that Sputnik V tested against the British and South African variant strain, as well as the original strain, first identified in China’s Wuhan province by laboratories in the United States. The laboratories used blood samples from people who had been vaccinated with Sputnik V in Argentina, Ginzburg said.

Stressing that Russian researchers had no involvement in the laboratory tests, Ginsburg said the results of the Sputnik V test against the Uhan executive confirmed what his team had found at the N. Gamalei Scientific Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow.

“It has also been shown that of all the vaccines currently used in the world, Sputnik V… is the best at neutralizing the ‘British’ variant strain,” said Ginzburg.

Although the antibody-induced response to the South African variant was less pronounced, the reduction was significantly smaller than that shown by other vaccines, Ginsburg said.
