SRAG: Which viruses can lead to the picture that caused emergency?

The Government of Minas Gerais and the City of Florianópolis, in Santa Catarina, decreed an emergency in public health due to the increase in cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) on Friday (2).

SRAG is a condition that covers cases of flu syndrome that cause impairment of respiratory function. According to the Santa Catarina Epidemiological Surveillance Board, the causes may be different respiratory viruses, such as influenza (Cause of flu), Covid-19 , rhinovirus (Cause of the cold), breathing (VSR, causer of bronchiolitis), among others.

According to researcher Tatiana Portella of the Infogipe Bulletin and Fiocruz’s scientific processing program, scientists have observed last week, in different states, the trend of increased SRAG hospitalizations associated with influenza virus.

In addition, according to the researcher, the national scenario is also related to cases of VSR in many states of the country and the beginning of the growth of SRAG cases by Influenza A.

“Rinovirus has also contributed to the increase in Srag among children and adolescents from two to 14 years, although there are already signs of slowdown in this growth. Already hospitalizations for influenza A, which mainly affect the population of young people, adults and the elderly, have grown in many states of the country, reaching moderate to high levels in the elderly in Amazonas, Mato Grosso do Sul and Pará,” says the researcher in the researcher in the researcher. Communiqué released by Fiocruz.

Also according to the foundation, in the epidemiological year of 2025, 45,228 cases of SRAG have already been reported, with 19,420 (42.9%) with positive laboratory result for some respiratory virus; 18,640 (41.2%) negative; and at least 4,262 (9.4%) are awaiting laboratory result.

Among the positive cases of the current year, 11.2% was observed for influenza A; 1.6% for influenza B; 38.4% for VSR; 27.9% for Rinoviruses; and 20.7% for SARS-COV-2 (COVID-19).

What are the symptoms of SRAG?

Symptoms include SRAG patients may have fever (body temperature greater than or equal to 37.8 ° C), difficulty or discomfort to breathe, decreased blood oxygenation, sensation of chest and face or purplish lips, according to information from the Minas Gerais State Department of Health. Children may also shorten breath, dehydration and decreased appetite.

Treatment may involve oxygen supplementation and respiratory physiotherapy, according to Albert Einstein Hospital. Despite being a procedure often sufficient to improve most patients, some need to undergo intubation.

SRAG prevention is done with vaccination against infectious agents.
