At least 16 people were killed and another 270,000 were forced to flee their homes, which were flooded by floods and landslides after the monsoon hit Sri Lanka, announced today the Disaster Management Center (DMC).
Most of the victims were killed by landslides caused by torrential rains that hit 10 of the country’s 25 regions.
In the Kegale area, a dog led rescuers to the spot where four members of the same family were buried alive under the mud. All four, however, were pulled out dead by the soldiers who undertook to locate them.
According to the DMC, many communities were evacuated and 270,000 people were forced to flee their flooded homes and seek refuge with friends, relatives or government-run shelters.
