Sri Lanka: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation accepted

Difficult situation in Sri Lanka as the offices of the prime minister and the president had become battlegrounds between the police and the protesters in the previous days.

Finally, the request of the citizens for the resignation of the country’s leadership was heard. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa tendered his resignation which was eventually accepted by the President of Sri Lanka. We remind you that Rajapaksa had fled abroad after his residence was occupied by thousands of enraged citizens. The anti-government protesters are gradually ending their occupation of public buildings.

“Gotabaya has legally resigned,” Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told reporters. The president had sent his letter of resignation to the head of the Sri Lankan national delegation the day before from Singapore, APE-BPE reports, citing Reuters.

The president of the parliament clarified that the authenticity of the letter was verified and “from now on, a new (acting) president should be named, as the Constitution stipulates.”

The country has been plunged into the worst economic crisis in its history: on the one hand there is the debt and its mismanagement, on the other hand the pandemic that has knocked the income from tourism and inflation and the shortages caused by the war in Ukraine. Bankruptcy in May resulted in the country having no foreign currency and unable to pay for imports of essential goods.
