Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation has been accepted, the speaker of parliament announced today, two days after the 73-year-old head of state fled abroad, his official residence occupied last week by thousands of protesters.
“Gotabaya has legally resigned,” Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena told reporters. The president had sent his resignation letter to the head of the Sri Lankan national delegation the day before, from Singapore.
The president of the parliament clarified that the authenticity of the letter was verified and “from now on, a new (acting) president should be named, as the Constitution stipulates.”
The resignation of Sri Lanka’s president has been made official following a popular uprising against his government as the country plunges into the worst economic crisis in its history.
