A state of emergency was officially declared on Wednesday (13/7) Sri Lanka a few hours after the flight of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as announced by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office.
“After the president left the country, a state of emergency was declared in order to deal with the situation in the country,” said Dinuk Kolobaz, the prime minister’s representative, according to the Athens News Agency.
Police announced an indefinite curfew in the western province, which includes the capital Colombo, in a bid to contain the protests.
Thousands of people have gathered in front of the prime minister’s office, with law enforcement responding by using tear gas. in an attempt to prevent them from invading it.

“There are protests in front of the Prime Minister’s office in Colombo and we need a curfew to control the situation» underlined a police official.
He added that the police have been ordered to crack down on demonstrations that are obstructing the functioning of the state.
Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives today after crowds of protesters stormed his residence on Saturday, forcing him to leave, and is expected to announce his resignation later.
