Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency again Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in an attempt to prevent any riots ahead of a vote later in the week to elect a new president.
Its leaders Sri Lanka have imposed a state of emergency several times since April, when protests began against the government’s handling of the deepening economic crisis and shortages of basic necessities.
“It is appropriate to do so in the interest of public safety, the protection of public order and the preservation of supplies necessary for the life of the community,” the state of emergency announcement said.
Wickremesinghe had declared a state of emergency last week after President Rajapaksa he left the country to escape the popular uprising Reuters reports. Colombo this morning remained calm.
It will be recalled that Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives and then to Singapore last week after hundreds of thousands of anti-government protesters took to the streets of Colombo a week ago and occupied his official residence and office. Parliament accepted his resignation on Friday and convened a day later to start the process of electing a new presidentwith the vote set for Wednesday.

The candidates
Wickremesinghe, a six-time prime minister who is considered an ally of Rajapaksa, is one of the top contenders to take over the presidency, but the protesters also want him gone, leaving open the possibility of further unrest should he be elected.
Premadasa, leader of the main opposition SJB party, is another leading contender, along with Dullas Alahaperuma who served as media minister and cabinet spokesman.
