Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned this Monday (9), after weeks of protest against his government .
The country has been rocked by popular discontent since March, when demonstrations – some of which turned violent – grew out of anger over an apparent mismanagement of Sri Lanka’s worst economic crisis since the country declared independence from Britain in 1948.
A national curfew was imposed after clashes between government supporters and opposition protesters in the capital Colombo, police said. The restrictions were announced shortly after Rajapaksa announced his resignation.
At least 80 people were admitted to hospitals after the protests, the National Hospital in Colombo said. Armed officers were deployed to Colombo, according to CNN.
