TrendForce predicts mobile computing demand will remain strong in the second quarter of 2021 as consumers continue to shift to online learning and work. In response to strong laptop demand, PC makers are actively ramping up stocks of components, including client SSDs. Meanwhile, customer SSD shipments are declining as the previously reported shortage of NAND controllers is exacerbated by the impact of the Texas power outage. As a result, SSD manufacturers are gearing up to raise prices for their products.
Taking into account these factors, TrendForce had to revise its previously published forecast of prices for solid state drives in the client segment for the second quarter. If earlier analysts had expected that prices would change little, the new forecast says that prices may rise by 3-8% compared to the previous quarter.

The source adds that Samsung’s Austin, Texas plant was hit by bad weather that hit the entire state last month. Due to the lack of electricity, the company was ordered to leave work. Work was largely suspended from mid-February to early March. The plant is now beginning to return to normal operations, but capacity utilization is expected to return to above 90% at the end of March at the earliest. The suspension has had a tangible impact on chip manufacturing. About 10% of the enterprise’s production capacity is devoted to the production of controllers for SSDs under the Samsung brand, mainly client chips shipped to PC OEMs.
