St. Petsas: The next local elections will be held on October 8, 2023

The Deputy Minister of Interior, Stelios Petsas, today refuted the rumors about a possible extension of the date of the local elections by the Parliament, answering a relevant topical question of the SYRIZA MP Miltiadis Hatzigiannakis.

Mr. Petsas stressed that “the position of the government is clear and no issue of postponing the time of the local elections has ever been considered”. He underlined that “law 4804/2021 is in force, where in article 5 par. 2, it provides that the municipal elections are held on the second Sunday of October, the fifth year of each municipal period” and “in paragraph 2 of article 43 of the same “According to the law, the regional elections are held on the same day as the municipal elections. Therefore, the next local elections will be held on October 8, 2023”.

At the same time, Mr. Petsas pointed out that he has mentioned these in the recent meeting he had with KEDE, on May 18, 2022 and a relevant press release was issued which is posted on the website of the Union.

SYRIZA MP, Miltiadis Hatzigiannakis, said that he is glad that the government and the Ministry of Interior are coming today and clarifying this issue, as all the local authorities ask us the question, that is, if you are considering changing the date of the local elections. I do not know, said the MP, where this gossip came from and was circulated, but a second reason we had to ask this topical question is why we are worried, as “it is now the government’s practice to make successive extra-institutional, unconstitutional provisions for self-government, many of which are referred to in the plenary session of the CoC, such as those for the municipal committees, etc. “.

The Deputy Minister of Interior remarked to the SYRIZA MP that “we did not see you having the same sensitivity as the anxieties of the local government and KEDE, when they raised the issue of inability of the municipalities to be governed by the Skourletis law, which in fact did not want to be expressed the concerns of the minorities, but a tripod effort in the implementation of the programs of the elected mayors and regional governors “. At the same time, Mr. Petsas advised “not to comment on the issues of justice and to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court. And I am sure that we will all respect any decision of the plenary of the Supreme Court and then we will be here to discuss all these issues “.
