Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the head of the Belarusian opposition, considers a military intervention by Belarusian forces in Ukraine “highly unlikely”, despite the alliance between Moscow and Minsk.
“I really doubt that Belarusian soldiers are participating in the invasion of Ukraine,” he said at a press conference in Warsaw.
According to Tikhanovskaya, the morale of the army is very low. The soldiers don’t want to fight the Ukrainians, whom they consider a “friendly nation” and “don’t want to die for Lukashenko or Putin,” he continued.
On Sunday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused Ukraine of attempting to bomb military targets inside Belarusian territory and threatened to “respond” to any hostile strike.
Tikhanovskaya is living in exile in Lithuania after the 2020 presidential election. Her husband, dissident blogger Sergei Tikhanovsky, remains imprisoned in Belarus.
In Warsaw, Tikhanovskaya met with Polish President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
