The roof of Major League Baseball’s Tropicana Field stadium appears to have been partially ripped off as Hurricane Milton batters the area.
Video captured outside the field by the CNN WFTS shows a portion of the ceiling exposed as pieces sway in the wind.
The stadium lights from inside can be seen shining onto the field outside.
Tropicana Field is the home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays and is located in downtown St. Petersburg. THE CNN has reached out to the Rays and MLB for comment.
No injuries were reported, and residents were urged to avoid the area, according to a spokesperson for the city of St. Petersburg.
In preparation for Hurricane Milton, Governor Ron DeSantis announced earlier this week that the camp would be used as a 10,000-person base camp for debris cleanup and first aid operations.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency had moved millions of gallons of water, millions of meals and other supplies and personnel to the area. No additional aid will harm Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, agency administrator Deanne Criswell said Wednesday.
Trucks were running 24 hours a day to clear mounds of debris left by Helene before Milton potentially turned it into dangerous projectiles, DeSantis said.
About 9,000 National Guard members have been mobilized in Florida, ready to help with recovery efforts, as have 50,000 power grid workers in anticipation of widespread power outages, DeSantis said.
Storm chaser Jonathan Petramala showed the CNN the huge tear in the roof of Major League Baseball’s Tropicana Field stadium in St Petersburg, Florida.
Petramala said it was “like a maze going through” the floodwater and debris as he drove from Tampa to St. Petersburg.
He also said several trailer parks and mobile homes were “being destroyed.”
