Stage collapse at festival in Spain leaves dead, injured

One person was killed and at least 17 were injured when strong winds caused part of a stage to collapse at a dance music festival near the Spanish city of Valencia earlier on Saturday, regional emergency services said.

The accident happened in the early hours of the Medusa Festival, an electronic music event held from August 10th to 15th in the town of Cullera, on the east coast, south of Valencia.

Of those injured, three suffered serious trauma injuries and 14 suffered minor injuries, regional emergency services said.

The festival has been suspended for the time being “due to inclement weather during the early hours of August 13 and in order to ensure the safety of participants, workers and artists,” organizers said in a statement on the festival’s Facebook page.

The festival site had been vacated “as a preventive measure to facilitate the work of the Medusa Festival’s emergency and security services,” the statement added.

Spanish media said other structures at the event were also damaged in the high winds.
