After Reddit users shared images of how a generative artificial intelligence program perceives male beauty standards in different parts of the world, it’s the women’s turn.
StyleSeat, an American marketplace for beauty professionals, decided to use Midjourney, an AI image generator, to showcase “beautiful women” – the quotes used by the company itself.
The biggest challenge, according to StyleSeat, was creating a prompt, the instructions or questions given to the AI model to get a response, free of bias, that could effectively guide the AI to consistently generate the expected images.
“It is important to understand that the ‘understanding’ of AI, derived from human input data, reflects human perspectives. Therefore, we are not comparing AI perception with human perception, but exploring whether AI can replicate the diverse standards of beauty interpreted by humans around the world,” explains the company.
The result is 100 images representing women from different countries.
“They show a variety of women with slight variations based on their country of origin,” analyzes Jessica Stewart, an art historian, for the My Modern Met website. “Interestingly, Midjourney seems to prefer a natural look, and most women show up with minimal makeup and jewelry.”
Jessica also points out that, although there is not much variation in body types – all women are thin – it is possible to notice ethnic differences. According to her, it can be assumed that the images produced by Midjourney represent a unique stereotyped beauty standard found in a given country.
