Starmer: At 2.5% of GDP by 2027 the UK defensive costs will rise

British defense spending will amount to 2.5% of the country’s GDP by 2027, Prime Minister Kir Starmer announced today in the largest gradual increase in the country’s defense budget after the end of the Cold War. “This government will begin the largest gradual increase in defense spending after the end of the Cold War,” Starmer told the House of Commons. “We will implement our commitment to defense spending at 2.5% of GDP, but we will do so to reach this level in 2027.” At the same time, he stressed that the country will target defense spending at 3% of GDP in the next House and these increased costs will be funded by cutting the budget of international development aid. As Starmer said, the assistance budget will be reduced from 0.5% of GDP to 0.3% in 2027.
