Starmer to continue Italy-Albania deal on migrants – Wednesday with Meloni

A day after another deadly migrant shipwreck in the English Channel, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will meet his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni in Rome today to discuss ways to tackle irregular immigration. According to the British press, Starmer, who canceled plans by Britain’s previous government to deport irregular migrants to Rwanda, has shown an “interest” in Meloni’s immigration policy. The Italian prime minister signed in November 2023 a controversial agreement with Tirana to create two migrant reception centers in Albania. The meeting between the Labor prime minister and the head of Italy’s far-right Adelphia party is scheduled for noon today (Italian time, 13:00 Greek time), according to Meloni’s office. A few hours before this meeting, the British government announced the establishment of a new agency responsible for border security, the Border Security Command, one of Starmer’s pre-election commitments.
