Starting from February of this year, Russians will be able to use biometrics for authorization on the Gosuslugi portal. As noted earlier, this login method is optional and can be used at will. Some experts are skeptical about biometric authentication, considering it less secure than two-factor authentication, which requires a username and password, as well as confirmation via SMS.
The Ministry of Digital Development, Telecommunications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation said that users who have previously registered in the Unified Biometric System (UBS) and have given their consent to use this service will be able to log in to the Gosuslugi portal. To date, you can register in the EBS at bank branches, and in the near future – through the MFC or a mobile application. In the latter option, you will need a new generation passport and a smartphone with NFC.
Analysts believe that when using biometrics, there is a risk of unauthorized access to the “State Services”, so it is better to leave the traditional two-factor authentication.
