State Department Bans Visas to People ‘Undermining Democracy in Georgia’

The US State Department has announced that it has banned visas for about two dozen people accused of undermining democracy in Georgia, including current ministers and members of parliament. “We are determined that high-ranking officials who undermine democracy or become complicit in it will be subject to visa restrictions,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement. “The measure taken today will affect about 20 people, mainly current ministers, members of parliament, law enforcement and security officials, as well as ordinary citizens.” Georgia has been in turmoil since the ruling Georgian Dream party claimed victory in October parliamentary elections, and the government decided last month to suspend accession negotiations with the European Union. Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in the capital Tbilisi for the past three weeks to denounce electoral fraud and the country’s drift from Europe’s path. Source: RES
