The United States supports calls for a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, following fighting involving Russian and Ukrainian forces near the plant, a State Department spokesman said Thursday.
“Fighting near a nuclear plant is dangerous and irresponsible – and we continue to call on Russia to cease all military operations at or near Ukrainian nuclear facilities, return full control of them to Ukrainian authorities, and support Ukrainian calls for a demilitarized zone around the nuclear plant,” the spokesman said.
On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate end to military activity near the facilities of Europe’s largest nuclear plant.
