State Department orders evacuation of unnecessary US embassy staff in Ukraine

The US State Department has ordered unnecessary US embassy staff to leave Ukraine amid growing tensions with Russia, the embassy said on Saturday, according to Reuters.

“Despite the reduction in diplomatic staff, the core embassy team, our dedicated Ukrainian colleagues, @StateDept and US staff around the world will continue their ongoing diplomatic and security assistance efforts. “Ukraine’s democracy and prosperity,” he said on Twitter.

Information that the US is also withdrawing OSCE personnel

The United States has decided to immediately withdraw US personnel from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) from Ukraine, two diplomatic sources told Reuters on Saturday amid fears of a possible Russian invasion. The OSCE did not respond to a request for comment.

The OSCE is conducting operations in Ukraine, including a Russian-led monitoring mission in the breakaway “Russian-backed” democracies in the east of the country.

One of the sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the US decision to withdraw the OSCE members has immediate effect and that they expect other countries to take similar decisions soon.

Two sources told Reuters that Britain had decided to move its OSCE personnel from the rebel-held areas of Ukraine to a government-controlled area.
