State Department: Putin calls for diplomacy ‘with barrel in temple’

Russia’s offer to hold talks with Ukraine was an attempt to carry out diplomacy “with a barrel in the temple,” said State Department spokesman Ned Price, stressing that if Moscow is serious, it should stop bombing its neighbor.

According to Reuters, Washington has not seen any indication that Russian President Vladimir Putin is willing to de-escalate the situation in Ukraine, Price commented during a regular briefing.

“We see that Moscow is implying that diplomacy is being carried out under the threat of weapons, at a time when bombs, mortar shells and artillery fire are being targeted by civilians. This is not real diplomacy,” he added.

Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said Russia was ready to send a delegation to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, for talks with Ukrainians after V. Zelensky called on his Russian counterpart to negotiate.

However, then The Kremlin has said it is unable to hold peace talksclaiming that Vladimir Putin initially agreed to hold talks when it became known that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a “neutrality” regime could be discussed in Ukraine.

However, according to the Russians, Ukraine proposed Poland’s Warsaw as the venue for the talks, after which Ukrainian officials cut off contact with Moscow.

Without demilitarization and “de-Naziization” contacts with the Ukrainian leadership will be uselesssaid the representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova.
