Agents from the Municipal Guard and state deputies from the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj) were involved in widespread confusion after an approach by the Special Commission to Combat Urban Disorder of Alerj, on Tuesday night (10), on Avenida Brasil , in the river.
In the images viral on social media, it is possible to see deputies Rodrigo Amorim (PTB), Filippe Poubel (PL) and Alan Lopes (PL) in the middle of confusion, confronting agents from the ‘BRT Seguro’ program, from the Secretariat of Public Order (Seop).
According to Seop, the agents carried out a routine operation to fine drivers who were traveling in the exclusive lane for public transport, which, according to the Brazilian Traffic Inspection Manual (MBFT), is considered a very serious infraction.
“The Public Order Secretariat (Seop) repudiates the action of state deputies who abused their authority to impede the inspection work of BRT Seguro, coercing and threatening public servants.”
In a note, the deputies claim that they were there to check reports of illegality in the blitz.
According to the parliamentarians, the Municipal Guard agents would be disrespecting citizens by removing regularized vehicles from public yards for driving in the exclusive lane, which, according to them, is “an infraction that can be resolved immediately, given that the Code Brasileiro de Trânsito predicts that the vehicle will only be fined, contrary to what was found at the scene.”
Deputy Rodrigo Amorim also reports having been threatened with a stun gun after reprimanding a military police officer for failing to help an elderly woman who was feeling ill during the inspection by the Municipal Guard.
“As always, we reiterate that we are in favor of legal operations and we remain unfailingly in defense of public security agents who honor their uniforms”, says the note.
The case was registered at the 22nd Penha Police Station, in Rio de Janeiro.
The Military Police, in turn, also released a statement about the case:
“We deeply regret the events that occurred last night on Av. Brasil, where public security professionals were disrespected and humiliated while carrying out their legal activities. PMERJ’s precepts are to treat everyone in a cordial and polite manner. To our military police officers we have all our support, consideration and respect.”
