State of São Paulo has critical stock for five of the eight blood types

Blood banks in hospitals in the state of São Paulo have a low donation rate and this may be related to the increase in cases of coronavirus.

According to data from Fundação Pró-Sangue, a public institution linked to the São Paulo State Government Health Department and to the Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, the low stock mainly affects types A- and O+, O -, B+ and B-, which are in critical condition.

Blood type A+ is on alert and blood types AB+ and AB- are stable.

In addition to the treatment for hospitalized patients with Covid-19, the donated material is designated for disease procedures and surgeries that require blood transfusion.

In a period of advancement of SARS-CoV-2 cases, the new rules, to donate blood it is necessary:

  • People diagnosed or suspected of having coronavirus are able to donate 10 days after full recovery;
  • Asymptomatic patients with a positive test are able to donate after 10 days from the test date;
  • Candidates who have had contact with positive cases of contamination by coronavirus are able to donate after 7 days of the last contact;
  • Those who underwent voluntary isolation or under medical advice are able to donate after the isolation period has expired;
  • Health professionals are able to donate, as long as they are using PPE correctly.

In the capital of São Paulo, the Hospital do Servidor Público Estadual (HSPE) is one of those who are suffering from a shortage of donations. According to information, the HSPE records the lowest stock since the beginning of the pandemic.

Blood donation is made at the address: Rua Pedro de Toledo, 1800, Vila Clementino. Collection is made from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays, from 8 am to 4 pm. It is not necessary to schedule an appointment.

According to hospital rules, those diagnosed with Covid-19 are prohibited from donating blood for 30 days after the end of symptoms.

In the blood bank of BP – A Beneficência Portuguesa de São Paulo, the alert is critical for types O- and A-.

To donate, it is necessary to attend the address: Rua Maestro Cardim, nº 1.041. Opening hours are from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm, and on Saturdays, from 7 am to 2 pm.
