The area of the Amazon where indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and English journalist Dom Phillips disappeared is dangerous due to the lack of state protection, according to André Guimarães, executive director of the Institute for Environmental Research in the Amazon (Ipam).
In an interview with CNN this Tuesday (14), Guimarães explained that the region is under federal government guard, but needs more active participation of the authorities to avoid the action of “illegal and criminal agents”.
“This increase in illegality and criminality ends up being promoted by an environment of low supervision and low punishment”, said the director.
Guimarães also pointed out that there is an increase in deforestation, which is largely due to “land grabbers, people who illegally occupy land and illegal mining”, in addition to illegal logging.
Also according to the researcher, these activities have been taking place permanently in the region, being a situation “very delicate and complex to be resolved”, but which demands firm action from the government.
“From now on, we have to build an Amazon project that presupposes the forest standing, legality to the detriment of illegality, which presupposes incentives to produce more and better in areas that have already been altered”, highlights the director.
