States in all regions of the country have high cases of Covid-19, points out Fiocruz

A bulletin from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), released this Wednesday (23), shows that states in all Brazilian regions recorded an increase in cases of Covid-19 in early November, compared to the previous month. Currently, the disease represents more than 61% of all cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in Brazil.

According to the bulletin, 15 of the 27 federative units have shown growth in the trend in long-term cases, in the last six weeks: Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Federal District, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Pará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima, Santa Catarina and São Paulo.

In most states, the increase is present in the adult population and in age groups above 60 years.

According to InfoGripe, the states of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraíba were the negative highlights, with the highest SARS increases. In these regions, contagions by Covid-19 have grown since the beginning of October.

The Fiocruz researcher responsible for the research, Marcelo Gomes, once again defended the importance of protective measures.

“To reduce the transmission of the virus, it is extremely important that the population resumes the use of adequate masks in situations of greater exposure, such as public transport, closed or poorly ventilated places, agglomerations and in health units. In addition, having vaccinations up to date is essential to reduce the risk of the disease worsening”, reinforces the InfoGripe coordinator.

Approved bivalent vaccines

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) unanimously approved this Tuesday (22) the emergency use of two Pfizer bivalent vaccines against Covid-19.

There are two updated immunizers that include sublines of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus and should be used as booster doses against the disease:

  • Bivalent BA1 – protects against the original variant as well as the Omicron BA1 variant.
  • Bivalent BA4/BA5 – protects against the original variant as well as the Omicron BA4/BA5 variant.

The decision was taken in a vote by the Collegiate Board of Anvisa in an extraordinary meeting held at night. For the evaluation, the agency had the collaboration of medical societies.

On Tuesday night, Pfizer released a note stating that updated vaccines should be delivered to Brazil in the coming weeks.

THE CNN consulted the Ministry of Health about deadlines for the arrival of bivalent vaccines in the country and availability at health posts. In a note, the ministry stated that “it will ask the laboratory for the schedule for sending the batches with the new immunizers, considering that the current contract of the portfolio with suppliers includes the delivery of vaccines with updated strains”.
