At least 13 people died after the roof of a railway station collapsed in Novi Sad, Serbia, this Friday (1st), according to N1, an affiliate network of CNN.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić announced the updated death toll, according to N1, adding that rescue operations are still ongoing.

More than 30 people were injured, according to local media reports. Two survivors pulled from the rubble are in hospital, a statement from the Serbian Ministry of the Interior highlighted, and the condition of one of them is “quite serious”.

Rescuers are in contact with two other people who are still trapped under the rubble, Dacic said. “We are in contact with two people under the rubble. We are working to remove them”, he commented.

Rescue teams went to the scene of the accident minutes after an emergency call was made, according to the minister. Almost 80 rescuers were sent to the scene.

The rescue operation is expected to take a few more hours.

Serbia’s Prime Minister Milos Vucevic offered his condolences to the families of the victims and thanked the rescuers.

Vucevic added that those responsible for the collapse would be held accountable.

According to N1, the station’s roof was renovated in 2021. More renovation work took place months later, and the building was officially reopened on July 5 this year.
