Steam Banned Blockchain & NFT Games: Virtual Items Should Not Have Real Value

The developers of the rather unusual video game SpacePirate officially announced on their social networks that the Steam platform had banned their project, indicating the support for operations with NFT (unique token) in the reasons. It soon turned out that now the platform will block absolutely all video games that use blockchain technology or NFT, plus all releases that allow interacting with cryptocurrency are banned. The SpacePirate developers said this is due to Valve’s ban on the use of virtual objects in games that have real value.

We chose to be upfront about blockchain gaming & NFTs. As a result, we finally lost the battle with Steam. While I’m disappointed for Age of Rust being removed, the point is more to the fact that Blockchain games as whole are going to be removed. This is setback for all.

Gamers on the Internet took this news with a large share of negativity, calling the Valve management hypocrites – the fact is that absolutely all relatively fresh projects of the company have virtual items that are sold for real money on the Steam trading platform. For example, the cost of knives from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive may well reach a million rubles, rare items in Dota 2 go to the buyer for 30 thousand dollars, and the famous “hats” from Team Fortress 2 have been sold almost since the release of the shooter in 2007. Valve itself makes an impressive profit on commission on every purchase and sale on the marketplace, but does not allow developers to do the same.

On the other hand, Valve’s position is quite understandable – NFT support as a way of making money for video game developers is not a very solid foundation. There are studios that sell NFT tokens even before the release of the game, promising in-game bonuses, and then simply disappear, leaving gamers cheated. In addition, there is a high degree of probability that in certain countries where the turnover of cryptocurrency is actively regulated, Valve may have problems if these bans were not introduced.
