Steinmeier calls on Putin to end the war

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Wednesday called on his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to withdraw his country’s army from Ukraine immediately.

“Respect Ukraine’s national sovereignty, stop hostilities,” Steinmeier said in a speech to the Stuttgart Catholic Church. “Mr Putin, end the suffering and destruction in Ukraine. Order your troops. “Do not deny direct and serious talks with President (of Ukraine Volodymyr) Zelensky.”

The federal president – an office that is largely ceremonial but traditionally seen as something of a German compass – said the conflict was affecting many other countries as millions of tonnes of grain were seized in Ukrainian ports, with food prices rising dramatically worldwide. .

“Many parts of the world will be threatened by famine and death in the coming months, especially in eastern and southern Africa,” Steinmeier warned.

The consequences of what the German president called “Putin’s war” hit countries “that have not yet recovered from the new coronavirus pandemic”, where “the earth is drying up, becoming barren due to the climate crisis,” he added.
