Stellantis sold more vehicles than Volkswagen in the first two months of 2021, according to the European Association of Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA). Most likely, the merger of the Italian-American company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles with the French manufacturer Groupe PSA happened in order to gain leadership in the European market.
So, according to ACEA, Stellantis managed to sell 480,000 copies in 30 countries, while Volkswagen sold 452,400 copies. It should be noted that the German manufacturer managed to remain in first place in passenger car sales – 419,855 units, for Stellantis this figure is 377,244 units. However, in the segment of commercial vehicles, the multinational corporation regained its leadership, having sold 103 644 copies, and Volkswagen – 32 545 copies.
In comparison, 2020 was a much more productive year for the German company. So, last year Volkswagen held the European crown with 3.23 million sales, and the combined performance of PSA and FCA was 3.03 million.
As for the best-selling model in Europe, this honorary title was given to the front-wheel drive compact car Peugeot 208, built on the PSA PF1 platform. Most likely, the hatchback conquered consumers with its design: original headlights, a wide radiator grille, an elegant hood and embossed stampings along the body. Everything is done in an exquisite French style that emphasizes youth and individuality. Prior to this, the leadership in terms of sales volume belonged to Volkswagen Golf.
Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, noted that the company’s efforts will focus on the development of light commercial vehicles, including vans. The new strategy is related to the fact that the corporation owns Opel and Vauxhall, which were acquired by PSA from General Motors in 2017. Now Stellantis’ share of the commercial van market has grown by 25%. The funds that Stellantis managed to obtain through sales will be used for new development and modification of the vehicle range.
