Stellantis eyes compact EV production in India, says president

Stellantis is exploring opportunities to manufacture compact electric cars in India for export, but has yet to make a decision whether to go ahead with the project, Automotive Group Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said on Wednesday.

“So far, Europe has not been able to produce affordable electric vehicles, so this is a huge opportunity for India if it can sell compact electric vehicles at affordable prices,” Tavares said at an industry event held in Chennai, southern India.

“We are working on it, but we haven’t decided yet. That’s what we’re trying to do,” said the executive.

In Brazil, a market traditionally known for compact vehicles and which is experiencing an acceleration in electric and hybrid sales, the industry has sought to convince India, an important sugar producer, to adopt the technology of hybrid flex engines, which run on electricity and also with gasoline and ethanol.

The idea is to increase the technology market to prevent Brazil from becoming a niche at a time when the main countries in the world are adopting electrification as a way to reduce pollutant emissions.
