Stellantis specialists at the ITS World Congress final event, which is dedicated to intelligent transport systems, shared the results of testing the autonomous piloting function of cars on highways and public roads as part of the L3Pilot project. It is worth noting that over the four years of this project’s existence, 34 partners from all over the world took part in it – from car manufacturers to research institutes and traffic management organizations. Stellantis has a leading role in the project, and the results already so far seem very promising.
During four years of work on the project, the autonomous piloting function was installed on 70 vehicles, which were tested in 7 countries on various road sections. To test the technology, the project leaders recruited professional drivers who have impressive experience in working with an SAE level 3 autopilot. As a result, the total test run on the highway was 400 thousand kilometers (about 200 thousand kilometers, the system collected the necessary basic data, the rest of the time was used to evaluate the autopilot). In the city, of course, the tests were not carried out so actively, but the results are also good.
For example, the manufacturer said that 24 thousand kilometers were covered on public roads in urban conditions, of which only 1800 kilometers were used to obtain baseline data. During these tests, the project developers tested the high-speed highway function with lane change function, the ability to drive at low speed in heavy traffic (simulated traffic jams), remote parking technology (both parallel and transverse) and all major controls. Moreover, Stellantis does not plan to stop at what has been achieved – in the near future the company will work on the Hi-Drive project in the same direction.
