The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) updated the Stellar network protocol to address an issue that resulted in half of the validators not running for more than ten hours last week.
According to a post on the Stellar Developers Blog, Stellar validators have voted to update the network to protocol version 16, which is effective immediately. The update was released on April 10 after it became known that some network members were having difficulty restoring access after the April 6 crash.
The developers argue that the protocol update fixed an issue that affected multiple nodes, but did not affect the stability of the network – there were enough validators to process transactions. Recall that last week the Stellar developers reported network outages due to the disconnection of about half of the SDF nodes.
In the FAQ, SDF explains that the Stellar Foundation validator nodes stopped processing registries while public Horizon stopped writing them. According to the FAQ, “for a short period of time, it was unable to service requests or send transactions to the network.”
According to the developers, engineers worked on a fix to fix the problem and released it later that day. Two days later, Stellar Core v16.0.0 was released and voted on by the network validators, leading to the rollout of the update.
“All affected nodes must upgrade to a version of the software that is compatible with version 16 of the protocol and restore network access,” the blog post said.
In conclusion, the developers noted that the features that were originally planned to be included in protocol version 16, including Asset Clawback, were not included in this release and will be added in the next update.
