Steve Harwell, former Smash Mouth frontman, dies aged 56

Singer Steve Harwell, who became known for founding and leading the band Smash Mouth, died at the age of 56, this Monday (4), his manager told the CNN .

No cause of death was released, but Harwell was receiving hospice care this weekend. He died at his home in Boise, Idaho, USA, with family and friends by his side, according to Robert Hayes, manager of Smash Mouth.

The band commented on the death on social networks. “Rest in peace knowing that you aimed for the stars and magically hit your target,” wrote the communicated.

Singer receiving palliative care

His manager had informed, this Sunday (3), that the musician was receiving palliative care at his home.

“While Steve is still here with us, unfortunately it will only be for a short time,” said the manager. Robert Hayes in a statement to CNN .

“We hope that people will respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time,” he added.

No further details were provided about Harwell’s medical condition.

Harwell was a founding member and longtime lead singer of Smash Mouth, best known for their singles “All Star” , “I’m a Believer” , “Walkin’ on the Sun” It is “Why Can’t We Be Friends” .

During Harwell’s career, the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo or Group Performance for “All Star”, a song that later achieved cult status after its appearance on the soundtrack “Shrek” from 2001.

“Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices of his generation. Steve loved the fans and loved performing,” said Hayes.

Harwell himself went to great lengths to increase the band’s early fame – personally taking the album “Astro Lounge” to radio stations across the country for airplay.

“We never do anything traditional,” Harwell said in 1999. “We never go through the front door. It’s always through the back door, or an open window or something, to play our songs.”

Since Harwell left the band in 2021, the group has continued to perform with new vocalist Zach Goode .
