The director Steven Spielberg 78, revealed that his desire to become a father emerged during the filming of the film “ET – The Extraterrestrial” (1982) . The filmmaker, who has seven children and six grandchildren, explained that working with actress Drew Barrymore, then just 7 years old, changed his perspective on life.
During the TCM Classic Film Festival in New York, Drew – now 49 years old – spoke about the film’s resounding success.
“I think ‘ET’ is the film I’m most proud of. It changed my life, without a shadow of a doubt. Everything in my life revolves around how this person believed in me, and it is that life that I try to honor every day,” said the actress.
An emotional Spielberg responded: “It also changed my life. Up until that point, in 1981, 1982, I was just making movies. That was my life. I was obsessed with telling stories, but doing ‘ET’ made me want to be a father for the first time. I had never thought about it until then.”
Drew joked, asking if his presence on set ruined the idea of fatherhood for the director. Spielberg responded: “Quite the opposite!”
In the conversation, the filmmaker admitted that some of his grandchildren have not yet had the opportunity to watch the science fiction classic.
“I have already shown the film to all my children and some of my grandchildren. Some are still very young, because I’m always worried that they might be scared by ‘ET’. I want to prepare them, explain what to expect before they encounter something unexpected”, explained the director.
